Synopsis

St Matilda’s College, Oxford is haunted. The building was formerly a convent and, so the story goes, three ghostly nuns wander its passages during the hours of darkness. The story goes on to say that anyone who sees the ‘three sisters’ will not be long for this world.

When one of the students mysteriously disappears, the Dean of the College, Dame Emily Shaw, has no option but to call in the police. Her call appears to be answered when a Police Box arrives in her study; the Doctor and Leela have come to investigate and uncover the dark secret that has lain buried beneath the college for almost a thousand years...

This is creepy...!

I didn't think the Doctor or Leela had that big of a role in this story, but that might be because neither story is too impactful. The Doctor spends most of his time learning about the nuns and catching up with Dame Emily Shaw, whilst Leela actively investigates the nuns with Megan. Despite this, it allows for a simple adventure to ease into and get to know the characters more, and for that I'm grateful.

As soon as I heard the trailer for the Cloisters of Terror, my mind immediately went to the Sarah Jane Adventure "Eye of the Gorgon". However, aside from the inclusion of nuns, this adventure is far from it. The nuns are a lot more creepy and ghostly, and they seem like a decent threat to pit against the Fourth Doctor. Again, they're nothing too special, but good enough to create an enjoyable story.

This setting was okay, but not too extravagant. At times, it reminded me of the First Doctor Early Adventure "Entanglement", where other times it reminded me of the Fourth Doctor Adventure "The Darkness of Glass". It is slightly worrying how this story depends on many already used aspects (Even though Entanglement was produced years after this story).

I was pleasantly surprised to hear the return of Dame Emily - had absolutely no idea Liz's mum was in this story and is extremely exciting considering The Last Post is the Third Doctor Audio I will listen to this year. In fact, I think I said "Ayy there was a reference to a previous audio- OH MY GOD IT'S LIZ'S MUM! IT'S LIZ'S MUM YOU GUYS IT'S 4 AND LIZ!!!" so you can probably guess that I'm a big fan of her. Again, the other side characters didn't have anything special to bring to the table. But Liz's mum returned.

Sometimes I just like to listen to a little romp leading to an easy review because I don't have to think about loads of different themes. I definitely wouldn't want a small scale story all the time, however.

Emily returning is brilliant but she was defo the prototype of what would have been Leela Margret n 4 I feel I’d love to have her back as a full time companion maybe with 5

This review contains spoilers!

This is part of a series of reviews of Doctor Who in chronological timeline order.

Previous Story: Suburban Hell

The return of Dame Emily Shaw, this was not a character I'd have been expecting to appear in any other stories, but it's not a bad thing.

Of course, this story is no 'The Last Post' but it's still quite good, probably my favourite of this series so far. The mystery of the "three sisters" is quite engaging and despite it being the generic "advanced space-ship crash landed in history causing strange things to happen" trope which is way too common in Doctor Who, it's still played entertainingly and overall this one is a fun little story.

Next Story: The Fate of Krelos
