Synopsis

Animated Reconstruction of The Celestial Toymaker, by Shapeshifter.

While the Doctor plays the Trilogic Game, Steven and Dodo are forced to play their own seemingly childish, but ultimately dangerous games, with the aim of being reunited and getting back to the TARDIS. Who will be the first to make a false move in this battle of wits, and will the TARDIS ever escape the Toymaker's snare

Fans of Doctor Who have long lamented the loss of the original 1966 master recordings of all except one of The Celestial Toymaker. All episodes have been animated in both colour and black and white using the original off-air audio recordings.

I'm generally only reviewing/rating the original story or the animation, whichever I saw more of, but I have to make an exception here. The story is a 3.5 (apparently I'm in the minority here!), but my god, the animation is demonic. I appreciate that they were trying to do "something different"... but did it have to be this?

Really, really beautiful, please watch this for yourself if you haven't, it enhances the original story so much

The animation really brought this story to life in a way I imagine the original didn't. Visually, this was stunning. The new animation style was really unique and quirky and I loved it! It was a shame that the Doctor wasn't hugely present, but it was a nice story nonetheless. Nothing groundbreaking, but definitely a very ahead of its time story.

If I was just to rate the animation itself, it would be a solid 8/10. Bar from the slightly uncanny depictions of Steven and Dodo, the world they inhabit is absolutely phenomenal. It is a beautiful and truly creative, bonkers piece of work.

The animation significantly adds to and lifts what is one of my all time most loathed stories. It provides an opportunity for the vocal performances to shine and got me excited about what was one of my all time least anticipated Doctor Who home media releases.

I’m not sure you could do something this off the wall with most animated reconstructions, but given the magical nature of The Toymaker, and how pedestrian the original story is - I’m so glad they went this route in this case.

This review contains spoilers!

Disclaimer: The second Part of my Review is the exact same Thoughts, that I already wrote for my Original Toymaker Review, if you already read that part, feel free to skip it.

This one is Hartnell’s worst Story, easily in my eyes.
I am a big Fan of his Era (if you can’t see from my high and overly long Rambles of some of my favorites), this one just doesn’t work.
Granted, watching the Animation does help it a lot Considering I find it as it is pretty much unpleased to watch, the Animation helps a lot and will probably be my preferred Way to experience this Story in the Future. I love the creative Liberties taken here, having those who are trapped in the Toymaker Realm being actual Toys is a brilliant Choice, which I just adore. The Likenesses of our Tardis Teams are a mixed bag.
As for the Story itself: Where do I begin? I love the Idea, Michael Gough (also famous for playing Alfred from 1989-1997!) does give a great Performance as the Toymaker, he is definitely a Highlight! And the whole Idea is great. That said, while it’s ambitious, and I do like the Idea, I think at the end this is such a loud, annoying and at times boring Serial.
I like most Ideas on Paper, but this one just feels loud in the worst Way possible for me, at least. There are certainly some Bits to love, but every time I think “Maybe I should watch it again!”, I just end up going with the Mind Robber, which is a better Story that knows its limitations and uses them in the best way possible. This Story does not.
