I'm not the only one that was reading Taphony and Jorjie as gay for a minute right?

Regardless, this is a genuinely pretty solid story, the chemistry between Taphony and the rest of the main cast is great, the scene where they're all playing catch and Taphony is messing about with her time powers is really fun and helps to endear her to the viewer.

Speaking of that scene, these are some of the best effects the show has had, both visual and practical. The makeup and prosthetics on Jorjie and Gryphen respectively are great, and I really like the snappy movements for Taphony's powers.

It has a good lesson too, teaching kids about friendship is great, and even if it all got undone, it's still heartwarming that at least K9 remembers.

Also god damn it, they're doing the thing again where they're just so incredibly close to good world building!!

Gryphen was part of a human experiment that The Department did on a child!? What the f**k, that's insane in the best possible way, and I'll never be able to see this character in the same light again.... and it's never going to be addressed again, ever.

“AS GOOD AS IT GETS?”

This episode is supposedly the best one in the series. And it's certainly an intriguing one, about a mysterious girl prisoner escaping from a virtual reality prison. They have a mystery and a moral dilemma here. Dull Professor is interesting, and the unique connection between Annoying Girl and Taphony is intriguing.

Taphony’s powers are pretty cool and definitely add stakes to the story. She is arguably the most memorable and interesting guest character/villain of the show. She has a good motive for her actions, and her attempts to steal Villain Mother for herself actually make me root for the heroes.

Forgettable Girl is good in this one, and Annoying Kid isn’t annoying.

Despite the slow tone, there is a sense of urgency in this once we realise the mortal danger Forgettable Girl is in.

I love the little hook at the end, which transports us all the way back to the beginning of the episode.

I doubt K9 will top this. It is far more developed and more complex than the rest of the series, with a compelling guest character in the sympathetic out of time girl Taphony. The performance is sparkling and sits among the regular cast beautifully. Everyone has an understandable motivation and none of our regular characters are treated as stupid, all being a couple of steps ahead of their usual selves. The introduction of time travel / time bending also feels satisfying. Taphony’s character does seem to be drawn to a similar mold of Eleven from Stranger Things, well ahead of that show’s conception. Any Doctor Who spin off, or even the main show itself, would be proud of an episode of this quality. From the incidental music to the camerawork, it all just shines a little more here.
