Previous Story: Mask of Tragedy

Typically, when I finish an arc like this, I should be feeling sad. Instead I feel relieved. That's not to say I haven't enjoyed it, because I have, but it's been an exhausting journey. I did enjoy this story but I think it has a lot of flaws nonetheless. I'm mixed on the Elder Gods stuff in this one, for about half the story it was really boring and frankly not all that grand and bombastic like it should be. I do think there was some really good stuff with To'Koth though.

We finally get a resolution to Thomas Hector and while it was sweet and absolutely the ending that Hex deserves I'm not sure it should have happened. It just sort of cheapens his death and all the really interesting character work that came with it. I'm struggling to find anything else to say about this story. I think it could have all been handled a lot better.

Look, this audio is odd haha The Doctor takes Hex back to Liverpool, but to a very different and strange Liverpool (that's the word that runs through much of the audio) - We encounter a population terrified by a possible Armagedon, a young pop guru is holding a concert announcing the end of the world. Yes haha, basically it's a guy on a stage with a microphone warning everyone to prepare for the end of the world that is very close... like, what!? Hahaha – Then appears an alien race that has a role in all this, which are nothing more than buff hawks that talk and drink tea hahaha (these are the ones on the cover of the audio). And the weirdest thing (as you can tell) the plot starts a bit crazy, but you get used to the setting and the situation to the point of recognizing the good premises in the plot in the sense of... "Okay, this is bizarre, but there are some good ideas here." However, as the story progresses, everything remains weird, seeming like its blocks are filled with characters and plots that don't lead to such significant places after all. However, what can be gleaned from Signs And Wonders are the final minutes of Hex as a companion – In the last episode, we have very interesting twists resulting in a very satisfying and cute ending for the character. Hex is a companion that I will miss dearly, his entire arc, his development, his relationship with the Doctor and Ace was amazing for me, apparently providing the peak of the 7th Doctor's audio run.

I don't know how to feel about this one.

On one hand, it's a solid episode. Nothing crazy, but compelling enough to keep me engaged in the story throughout. Its character work is strong, and it serves, on paper, as a satisfying end to both Hex and Sally's stories.

On the other hand... well, I'm not actually satisfied am I? That's why I'm writing this.

Hex died. It was abrupt and tragic, but also perfectly built up to and executed. What followed was, for me, a profound exploration of grief, giving us both insight into how the Doctor compartmentalizes loss (until he can't) and how Ace can hold onto denial long past the point of it being healthy.

I loved the character of Hector Thomas (even if I wish his emotional state had been delved into with greater complexity). He was a ghost made flesh, a manifestation of Ace's inability to let go.

The culmination of this arc, to my mind, should have made good on all of that emotional buildup. Hector Thomas should have left, or died, and Ace should have had to finally confront the loss that she'd been denying for so long.

Instead, we get a sort of wish fulfilment. Ace learns nothing. Hex gets his happy ending, and his sacrifice means a little less. An arc about a very real exploration of loss and grief ends with a hand wave of elder god magic (who are nice now, actually). Punches were pulled, and it disappoints the lover of beautiful tragedies in me.

All that said, it was a fine episode. I enjoyed listening to it, and it was well written. I just wish it hadn't done what it did.
