Thworping through time and space, one adventure at a time!

“SALTWATER: A DIMENSION TOO FAR?”

Saltwater opens the Other Worlds set of The Dimension Cannon, sending Rose to a world where a powerful corporation is extracting all the salt from the oceans, with dire consequences. The premise is intriguing, setting up an environmental and political thriller, but the execution leaves much to be desired. The first half is heavy on exposition, which slows the pacing considerably. While the story picks up when Rose joins forces with this world’s Clive and Reverend Stacey to uncover the conspiracy, it never builds enough tension to become truly gripping.

JACKIE AND CLIVE STEAL THE SHOW

Back in Pete’s World, Jackie and Prime Clive provide some much-needed comic relief as they struggle to manage Control in Pete’s absence. The interactions between the Clives—both equally enthusiastic about their work—are a definite highlight, offering some of the story’s most enjoyable moments. These lighter scenes contrast nicely with Rose’s mission, but they also emphasise how much more engaging the supporting characters can be compared to the central plot.

VERDICT: A PROMISING PREMISE WITH LITTLE PAYOFF

Despite strong performances and a solid concept, Saltwater ends up being one of the least compelling alternate Earths explored so far. The intriguing setup never quite delivers on its promise, and the lack of real stakes makes for a rather underwhelming experience. If The Dimension Cannon wants to stay fresh, it needs to start embracing more dramatic and diverse alternate realities rather than treading similar ground over and over.
