There's a good deal of gritty nuance established throughout, a cutting atmosphere that it never really lets up on. Wonderfully emblematic of the Seventh Doctor, his darker, more brooding elements played with to masterful effect. Liv Chenka (Nicola Walker) was also quite good and full of potential, albeit somewhat lost in the shuffle during the later half. Delighted to know she comes back around at some point. Though this story is indeed quite good, it's not necessarily to my personal tastes at current. I feel it's one I'd really have to listen to in a specific mood to be able to fully appreciate. I also would have preferred if some plot elements were made a bit more prominent earlier on rather than seemingly only taking precedence later on (particularly Elicien and her music); however, I will freely admit that this is my first time listening, so perhaps some little hints simply slipped my mind at the time. This is part of a series of reviews of Doctor Who in chronological timeline order. Previous Story: Lurker's at Sunlight's Edge Surprisingly... not bad, for a Briggs story. And not just that, a Briggs legac sequel. Considering The Robots of Death's main twist was the robots being murderous (I know, who could've guessed?) it's fitting for the sequel to be the opposite and have every single robot be completely innocent. There's not much substance to the story, but it's fun enough and the characters were good, particularly Liv. Not really much to say beyond that, it's a very generic story that's executed really well. Robophobia works very well as a nostalgic continuation of one of the most iconic and popular arcs from the era of the 4th Doctor, "The Robots Of Death," which does a very good job of introducing a character who will later become an important companion of the 8th Doctor, Liv Chenka – This time, Briggs' writing left me intrigued and sufficiently captivated by his story, even feeling a monotonous and sluggish vibe in its first half. I confess that I even had a slight impression of repeated events, but still, the unfolding of this initial block pleased me greatly. The way the mystery is conducted is very engaging along with great, intelligent twists that are far from being considered predictable. Another positive point to highlight is the characters, each of them has their role and purpose being very striking – The second half is phenomenal, from a rhythmically paced investigative plot with claustrophobic murders, we move to a psychological suspense where the main pieces start to come into play, reaching the climax of the story. I confess that Liv Chenka's introduction did not convince me very much that the character will later be a companion; you see her as a secondary, passing character, but this does not negate the fact that she has a fundamental and very important participation in the problems of the audio. Now speaking a bit about the biggest star, the 7th Doctor of course, who once again is incredibly manipulative, enigmatic, and quite dark in a way that even the listener may start to doubt the protagonist - At every moment, he seems to already know all the answers, but is eager and curious for Liv Chenka and the others to find these answers on their own. The concept of fearing robots that we see in The Robots Of Death receives reinforced deepening, enriching even more the idea that we saw being applied in the arc of the 4th Doctor. In summary, Robophobia is yet another outstanding highlight from the BIG FINISH's catalogue of audio dramas of the 7th Doctor that features a nostalgic, claustrophobic, and enigmatic storyline.
