This is part of a series of reviews of Doctor Who in chronological timeline order. Previous Story: The Silurian Candidate The vibes of this story are immaculate. I'm not even sure what was going on, I just know I liked it. It's very surreal and timey-wimey but also grounded and tense, particularly in the scenes with Ace at the beginning. The idea of a alternate timeline where the East won the Cold War has been done to death both outside and probably inside Doctor Who but I still really enjoyed it here. Here is yet another of the few highlights from this batch of audios from Mel's return - Red Planets has a very interesting plot that plays out its alternative timelines very well. The TARDIS Team comes across an alternative version of the world where the Soviet Union has taken control of the United Kingdom and much of the European continent, the Cold War followed different paths than we know - Reading some reviews and curiosities it seems that this audio served as a response to the label that the series was getting at the time of being a “left-wing show”, showing here a scenario describing a kind of communist threat even though this is not the main focus of the story. The Doctor and Mel are involved in an investigation that includes a space expedition to Mars, where a strange signal is being transmitted - When I heard the line “Doctor, do you know what's on Mars??” the seventh replies “It's a long story” I immediately thought... ICE WARRIORS!!! LOL...But no, they are not present here, let's face it, that would be quite predictable. Meanwhile, Ace is in Berlin in 1961 investigating a strange event trying to save a wounded British spy. Honestly, I didn't find the plots that engaging, some moments even gave me a feeling of a bit of dragging, the story spends a lot of time loading and feeding its mysteries and enigmas to the point of questioning "Okay, cool, but where are we going with this?” – Until we reach part 4 and the big revelations really happen giving a bombastic tone to the plot, however, the conclusion is quite rushed - The revelation/explanation of the importance and the connection that Ace's plot has with that of the 7th Doctor and Mel was really like: “Ah...that's it, cool”.
