Pride of the Lampian: The Dangers of Archaeology The opener of Volume 5 begins with an intriguing premise: Benny and the Unbound Doctor uncover a relic tied to the mysterious Lampians, a civilization whose very existence challenges established history. While the concept promises intellectual intrigue and a deeper dive into Benny’s archaeological expertise, the story doesn’t quite stick the landing, despite some standout moments. One of the story’s strongest elements is its emphasis on Benny’s role as an archaeologist. Her partnership with the archivist Drolla is engaging, offering a quieter and more thoughtful approach to uncovering the truth about the Lampians. For long-time fans of Bernice Summerfield, this return to her professional roots is a welcome change of pace, contrasting nicely with the usual universe-shaking stakes of her adventures. The methodical investigation is a highlight, showcasing Benny’s intellect and determination. This focus allows her to take center stage, with the Unbound Doctor stepping into more of a supporting role. The Doctor, skeptical about the existence of the Lampians, spends much of the story conducting his own research. His reduced role allows Benny to reclaim the spotlight, which works well in this context. That said, his moments are still memorable, particularly his whimsical desire to buy a hat stand for the TARDIS—a delightfully eccentric touch that brings levity to the otherwise serious tone. This subplot is one of the story’s more charming aspects, balancing the weightier themes with a bit of humor. Unfortunately, the narrative falters in its final act. What begins as a nuanced exploration of myth, history, and science devolves into a standard alien invasion plotline. Benny inadvertently unleashing the Lampians and their destructive force feels predictable and undermines the story’s earlier complexity. The themes of scientific curiosity and the potential dangers of uncovering forgotten civilizations are touched upon but not deeply explored. As a result, the climax lacks the emotional and intellectual payoff needed to elevate the story beyond its promising setup Final Thoughts: Pride of the Lampian offers a compelling premise and a refreshing focus on Benny’s professional expertise, but it ultimately falls short of its potential. While the slower, investigative pace is a nice change of tone, the story’s third act feels formulaic and rushed, undermining the intrigue built up in the first two acts. For fans of Bernice Summerfield, the story provides some enjoyable moments, particularly in its character interactions and archaeological focus. However, the lack of a satisfying resolution makes it a middle-of-the-road entry in the New Adventures series. Like Liked 0 Open in new window Statistics AVG.
