"Obsessions: A Brief Interlude of Manipulation and Reflection"

Obsessions, the opening story of The One collection, offers a short but introspective interlude set entirely within the TARDIS. The narrative revolves around a discussion between the Doctor and Alice about the nature of obsession, while Abslom Daak delves deeper into the ship in his ongoing search for his wife.

Though the story doesn’t break any new ground, it serves as a poignant character piece, drawing parallels between the Doctor and Daak. It subtly reveals the Doctor's manipulative side, as we learn he knows the truth about Daak's wife but subtly steers him away from continuing his search.

📝Verdict: 6/10

While it’s far from essential, Obsessions adds a reflective tone and a touch of emotional depth to the collection, making it an intriguing, if not particularly groundbreaking, start.

I am obsessed with the fact that Absolm Daak got a Titan comics run, it’s surprising that they were able to get the rights! I suspect DWM wouldn’t be too happy about it.

If you are familiar with Mr Daak then this is a satisfying comic indeed. Comparing The Doctor with a character who couldn’t be further from him in some ways, and making you reconsider how similar they are.

Some rare character development for Absolm Daak!

Just a brilliant character piece for Abslom.

When you sit down and think about it, there really are a lot of parallels between a post-Time War Doctor and Abslom Daak, and this story does a great job of showing that. The Doctor sees in Abslom who he could have been and can empathise with his current situation, but also knows that Abslom absolutely won't listen to him if he tries to talk, so talks about that obsession to Alice while letting Abslom listen in.

The emotion you can see on his face when he finds his wife, and the contrast between that and the facade he puts back on when he comes back pretending he hadn't, it's just great.

This story does more to make me like Abslom as a character than the full previous volume, and with this level of writing for him I can't wait to see more.
