I've been heavily interested in Dark Gallifrey as a range, due to the fact it has been teased as one big arc, which I love. Big Finish have done several arcs over the years, most notably with the 8th Doctor. One of which, Doom Coalition, was my entry point to the audio medium. That said, I've been missing arcs in the past couple of years, bar the couple they have done here and there. This isn't an issue per say with this trilogy in itself, but Dark Gallifrey as a concept, they are just so far disconnected at present. Sure, they share some semblance of an idea, a concept of Dark Gallifrey, but as of right now they are too far separated. When it comes to Missy's trilogy, there really isn't a lot of connections, or hints to Dark Gallifrey, until really the end of this part. I think this trilogy will become increasingly more relevant as the series progresses, but given we're 3 trilogies in, and I still don't really know what Dark Gallifrey is, or how they connect, is a tad concerning. That said, time to focus on the GOOD! Michelle Gomez, and Missy, are finally serviced well in this trilogy. Big Finish have really not written Missy well, or given her the best stories save a few, so this is a huge relief. I've made it no secret how I didn't particularly care much for Missy Part 1, however Rochana Patel in the behind the scenes content really gave me confidence for the rest of the trilogy, and she has delivered well and truly. I think, in all honesty part 1 has been recontexualised for me following the end of the trilogy. This feels very much like a 3 parter, so now all the pieces have fit together it does land better in my head. This story, and the trilogy, have so many hilarious moments and callbacks to the history of who and a plethora of fourth wall breaks which genuinely got a laugh out loud moment from me. I think Missy is a character who is comedic, sure, but in the past Big Finish have leaned far too much into the comedic aspect whereas here, Patel gets the balance just right. While Dark Gallifrey has yet to scratch my arc-wanting itch, what Missy's trilogy has done is provide an excellent story from start to finish. Its also worth mentioning, this is the first trilogy where in my opinion the quality has gotten stronger with each episode, and the finale has finally stuck the landing compared to the last two trilogy finales. All in all, this trilogy proves that Missy can be done right on Big Finish, and I hope that if we hear Missy again, Patel will be involved heavily.
