Previous Story: The Widow's Assassin

Sequels to classic serials can either be the most dull, fanwanky rehash of the original or a really cool spiritual successor that homages the original while still adding new depth and content. Luckily, this falls into the latter category. This is quite a fun revisit to the setting of The Dalek Invasion of Earth, a story that I personally really enjoy particularly for the atmosphere and worldbuilding. Having Daleks who don't know the Doctor yet is also a fun bonus as that often leaves stories redoing the same "Doctor gets captured and Daleks monologue about how the Doctor is the number one enemy" schtick.

While I really like the previous story in this arc, it didn't give Peri and the Doctor proper time to reunite (which is a shame because I love how Nev Fountain writes their dynamic). This story has plenty of moments between them and I really like how this is a Peri who doesn't put up with the Doctor's rubbish anymore. Stellar performances from both Nicola Bryant and Colin Baker and also the supporting cast who made this story a lot more engaging. It feels quite rare that a Dalek story ends up being as good as this but when they do end up being good they're good.
