Thworping through time and space, one adventure at a time! “LITURGY OF DEATH – A GRAND FINALE WITH UNFINISHED BUSINESS” Liturgy of Death wastes no time picking up from Sanctuary, throwing the Eternity Club straight into its biggest challenge yet. With the members imprisoned and all hope seemingly lost, the unlikeliest hero steps forward—Secretary Pym. In a moment of pure audacity, he bluffs his way through by pretending to be the Liturgy of Death’s god, buying the others precious time. This sets the tone for an episode that is both tense and humorous, with Pym proving just how much he has grown since the series began. Meanwhile, the ever-mysterious nurse finally takes an active role, aiding Benny and the others in their escape. For a storyline that has been steadily building over four box sets, the payoff is both satisfying and unexpectedly small-scale. Rather than a grand, universe-shaking battle, the climax centres on intimate, character-driven moments, as the club members rally together to fight back. FRIENDS, FOES, AND AN UNDERWHELMING THREAT One of the episode’s biggest strengths is how well it uses the entire cast. Every member has a role to play in preparing defences, crafting weapons, and standing together to protect their home. It’s a great showcase of how far these characters have come, especially Starll, who throws himself into battle with reckless enthusiasm and nearly pays the price for it. However, the Liturgy of Death themselves are a bit of a letdown. Skeletal beings with deep, ominous voices are a very Big Finish-style menace, but they never quite feel as threatening as they should. Their presence creates tension, but ultimately, they lack originality and rely more on booming proclamations than actual menace. THE OLDEST ONE’S FINAL GAMBIT The story’s most intriguing moment comes at the climax, as the Oldest One steps up to confront the Liturgy. Her furious, devastating attack saves the day, but it leaves behind a lingering question: is she truly the Doctor, or was this a final, calculated deception from the Master? The ambiguity is a brilliant touch, ensuring that even as the storyline wraps up, there are still mysteries left to ponder. CLOSURE WITH ROOM FOR MORE With the battle won and Benny’s debts settled, she is free to leave. Yet, in a heartfelt moment, she chooses to stay, cementing her bond with the club. One of the final scenes, with Starll and Grizella sharing a quiet, tender moment, adds a lovely emotional touch to the ending. However, Liturgy of Death smartly leaves the door open for future stories. The identity of the Oldest One remains uncertain, and new club members are set to arrive—though who they are is left tantalisingly unrevealed. VERDICT: A SATISFYING, IF MODEST, CONCLUSION While Liturgy of Death doesn’t deliver a villain as memorable as the rest of the saga deserved, it still provides a strong and rewarding conclusion to The Eternity Club arc. With well-earned character moments, an exciting final battle, and lingering mysteries, it ensures that Benny’s latest adventure ends on a high note—while keeping just enough threads dangling for whatever comes next. 📝79/100 MrColdStream View profile Like Liked 0 15 December 2024 · 12 words Review by twelvesoswald Spoilers This review contains spoilers!
