Thworping through time and space, one adventure at a time!

“HUNGRY THIRSTY ROOTS: A MEMORY-FILLED FINALE”

Hungry Thirsty Roots serves as the grand conclusion to the Sapling arc, bringing the Eleventh Doctor and Alice face-to-face with the Scream in a TARDIS that has been overtaken by Sapling’s growth. This unusual setting allows for a visually striking take on the ship’s interior, with the Doctor’s and Alice’s stolen memories transforming into fruit hanging from the tree-like structures.

The art style receives a noticeable improvement here, featuring more vibrant colours and well-drawn character models. This is a welcome change, as previous entries in the arc have suffered from inconsistent or washed-out visuals. The tree-infested TARDIS adds a creative layer to the story, making the environment feel dynamic and thematically relevant.

One of the most engaging aspects of the story is the Doctor and Alice travelling through different parts of the TARDIS while encountering echoes of the Doctor’s past adventures. This reinforces the arc’s ongoing theme of memories—how they define us, how they can be taken, and how they shape the future.

The return of the Scream provides a fitting antagonist for the finale. His goal—to use the Sapling and the TARDIS to spread himself across the universe and finally be remembered—ties in neatly with the overarching themes of the arc. Sapling has always been a story about memories: losing them, gaining them, and understanding their importance. The Scream’s desire to imprint himself on existence brings everything full circle.

📝VERDICT: 7.1/10

Hungry Thirsty Roots delivers a solid conclusion to the Sapling arc, wrapping up its themes in a visually creative and engaging way. The improved artwork, the journey through the Doctor’s memories, and the Scream’s fitting motivations make this one of the stronger instalments in Titan’s Eleventh Doctor run. While the arc as a whole has had its ups and downs, this final chapter brings it to a satisfying close.
