In celebration of the 20th anniversary of Bernice Summerfield, BIG FINISH launched The Story So Far line which includes two volumes of stories about the character situated at different points in her life, and of course, bringing together new and old known characters – Written by James Goss this is the only audio format story that shows and explores Benny's youth, until then all her childhood and adolescence were told in the anthology "Missing Adventures" released by the same, BIG FINISH. Ever After Happy takes place during the period when the young orphan Summerfield, aged 16, was studying at a military school called "Spacefleet Academy" and was already flirting with the idea of devoting herself to archaeology - Besides adding more details of the character, Goss's plot serves to further intensify all the feeling of hurt and revolt that the character had and has in relation to military life, a sentiment that later causes her to disappear hiding in a forest near the Academy. It also ratifies the strong traits of her rebellious personality, her instincts to lead life the way she wants, the troublemaker way, we see that everything was already rooted in her adolescence- and what makes the whole experience even more fun is the meeting of her two versions (adult and teenager), the version we know the older passes part of the story claiming to be the new gardener of the school named "Wintergreen" (a satire with her own surname), this factor provides hilarious scenes and situations such as students commenting among themselves, how terrible the new gardener is at what she does. What is interesting about this conflict between the two identical personalities is that it is the same person dealing with herself, which made me think: would I put up with myself? Would you put up with yourself? The story still has a subplot that involves a strong suspicion of the existence of a spy infiltrated in the school due to a war scenario. Naturally, both versions of Benny are accused, especially the younger one who is isolated camping in a forest very close to the school. Speaking of her, I must give total positive credits to Emily Laing's performance, she does a fantastic job interpreting the younger version of Bernice who even ends up standing out more than Lisa Bowerman. In summary, Ever After Happy is a very simple, light, and enjoyable story to listen to, it fulfills its only objective of bringing more information about Benny's life very well, perhaps the only negative point (but still harmless) is the explanation of the reason the archaeologist went back to her past, it remains very poorly explained to the point of not understanding anything, I simply don't understand why they wouldn't give a reason.
