Synopsis

Lucie Miller always loved Christmas back home in Blackpool. Her mam running a still-frozen turkey under the hot tap at ten. Great-Grandma Miller half-cut on cooking sherry by eleven. Her dad and her uncle arguing hammer and tongs about who was the best James Bond all through dinner. And in the afternoon, Aunty Pat, haring up to the house on the back of a moped weighed down with ridiculous presents.
Christmas 2009 didn't turn out like that.

Christmas 2009, the Doctor turned up…

Man, that was an emotional ending. Didn't expect that from the first episode.

Cons: I got lost in the first 15 minutes, I don't think there was enough exposition to tell what was going on, I'll have to listen to it again. I also wasn't that big of a fan of the Zygon plot, though it does make sense story wise, so just a minor nitpick.

Pros: The whole last 30 mins or so of Lucie finding out the secret and their farewell was very emotional. I know Lucie is back for the finale, so not sure how that will happen, but if this was the end of her story I would be satisfied. Not sure if I'd prefer this to The Girl Who Never Was, or not.

This was an absolute masterpiece. Every Auntie Pat story thus far has been a banger, and this is the perfect bow to put upon this trilogy. It's full of emotion, pathos, and tragedy. I can hardly blame Lucie for leaving the Doctor at this point. All the secrets, the baggage from Orbis, the recent events of the s3 finale... it was inevitable. It was part Eastenders Christmas Special, part It's A Wonderful Life...ish. The Zynog is an interesting concept but isn't exactly the standout of the story, the real emotional core of the story is Pat-Hagoth, Lucie, and the Doctor. The drunk santa is fun, too.

This was an exquisite opening to Season 4 and I hope all stories remain this strong.

LUCIE: Everything's changed.

DOCTOR: Lucie I was wrong. I should have told you.

LUCIE: Now I'll never be able to trust you again. Properly like.

DOCTOR: But people are fallible.

LUCIE: Not you, though. Not you.

DOCTOR: Yes me, Lucie, me. I'm no superhero you know, I don't have X-ray eyes, I can't leap tall buildings with a single bounce.

LUCIE: But you travel in time and space, you've got two hearts, you live in a magic box that's bigger on the inside, you know all about stuff! You are the Doctor! You are brilliant. And it was great. I mean really bleeding great and, well, that's how I wanna remember it. That's how I wanna remember you.

DOCTOR: So I'm just a memory now?

LUCIE: Yeah, the best memory I've got.

( The Doctor walks away towards the TARDIS)

LUCIE: Yeah, I remember the Doctor, he was great, we had a great time, an amazing time, then one night he just disappeared in his magic box, just disappeared, and I'll never forget him. Never.
