So, I had to look up what Plasmavores were while listening to this.  I do very much remember the alien from Smith and Jones, and even her Slab minions.  She was a pretty distinct character and definitely stands out in the franchise's history, but the name had entirely escape me.  Plus, I don't think it's a great sign that Christmas with the Plasmavores didn't really keep me engaged enough that I was looking up stuff like this.

That being said, Sophie Aldred really captured the spirit of the original Plasmavore.  This audiobook was great, in no small part thanks to Aldred's phenomenal work.  Writer Dave Rudden, who is pretty solid across the entire book, is a little weaker for this particular chapter.  I just kept expecting a bit more of a twist or a surprise.  The Plasmavore and her Slabs menace a nine year old named Katherine, and her father Morris.  Katherine is okay.  She's very mature for her age but it kind of makes sense giving her situation.  But other than defeating the Plasmavore there isn't really much else to this story.  There's a character arc to her but it's not very deep nor impactful.  It's a bit disappointing overall.

A FROSTY BITE OF HORROR

This atmospheric winter horror weaves an eerie tale of a family of Plasmavores making contact with a human child. It’s an unusual story, with no Doctor or companion present for most of the story—though the Doctor does make a brief appearance at the end.

The light horror tone is handled well, creating an unsettling yet approachable mood. Its unique angle adds some intrigue, but the story ultimately lacks the impact to leave a lasting impression. A serviceable, spooky tale for a cold evening, but not one that stands out in the Whoniverse.
