Review of Wirrn Isle by MrColdStream

Thworping through time and space, one adventure at a time!

“WIRRN ISLE: A HORROR-INFUSED SEQUEL THAT DOESN’T QUITE STICK THE LANDING”

Wirrn Isle takes the Sixth Doctor and Flip to the far future of 16127, where humanity is rebuilding on a ruined Earth, only to face a new threat lurking in the depths of Loch Lomond. As a spiritual successor to The Ark in Space, this base-under-siege story leans into horror, with writer William Gallagher crafting an atmosphere thick with tension and dread. The music and sound design reinforce this unease, making for a gripping opening.

STRONG START, UNEVEN MIDDLE

The first part sets up an intriguing mystery, but as the story unfolds, it moves at a frantic pace that sometimes makes it difficult to follow. The supporting cast is fairly basic, though Roger Bentinck delivers a solid performance. The Wirrn are present, but they don’t quite exude the same menace as in The Ark in Space, and their threat isn’t always as tangible as it should be.

A RUSHED AND UNDERWHELMING FINALE

While the latter half of Part 3 brings a welcome surge of tension, the finale feels overly convoluted and struggles to maintain the eerie tone established earlier. The climax is surprisingly low-key, failing to deliver the payoff the story seemed to be building towards.

VERDICT: ATMOSPHERIC BUT INCONSISTENT

Wirrn Isle has strong horror elements and a promising setup, but its execution is uneven. The pacing is erratic, the Wirrn feel underused, and the conclusion lacks impact. A decent listen, but not as effective as its Ark in Space predecessor.
