✅8/10 = Very Good!
Thworping through time and space, one adventure at a time!
Dark Gallifrey: War Master 1 was a disappointing release, so I go into the second part with lowered expectations.
Right off the bat, the story establishes a slightly lighter tone, with Bennie back at the university holding lectures, spending time with her cats, and going out on dates.
What I truly find interesting here is how Bennie dates Captain John Hart, who is very interested in Dark Gallifrey, while arguing about him with her colleague and friend, the Provost, whose voice sounds very familiar to us. He is, of course, the War Master we have been waiting for to pop up, and he’s also trying to find Dark Gallifrey.
Lisa Bowerman and Derek Jacobi are delightful, as you'd expect. James Marsters is a somewhat random inclusion, but he brings good energy. They do make for a pretty fun trio to listen to, especially the banter between Jacobi and Marsters.
This story is more to my taste. Benny is at the forefront, but the War Master is pulling the strings in the background by using Captain John to manipulate Benny to reveal the location of Dark Gallifrey, only to notice how difficult she is to fool.
The groovy soundtrack is really good.
This audio is fairly small-scale until the third act, once Benny finally takes the Master and John to Dark Gallifrey. Here, Gows drops a few more hints as to what this place is without giving the game away.
The ending is one of those "what the heck just happened?" endings that make me excited about the third set.
