This story was very much written as what if the Doctor’s first meeting with the Sontarans was shown on tv in the Hartnell era. I found it captured the vibe of the era extremely well, and Dan Starkey really showed his skills with his portrayals of Sontaran commanders learning about humans. The SSS is back in action, and we also get some appropriately weird aliens. Sadly this was the late Jean Marsh’s last performance for Big Finish and you could tell she was quite limited and sounded much older than Sara should be. Peter Purves does a deft job narrating and his First Doctor is great (and not far from Noonan’s). Overall an effective welding of newer concepts back to the Hartnell era.
