TARDIS Guide

Review of The Reign of Terror by Dragonwitch

Every story this season has started with a great episode, and this is no exception. After all we've seen this season, those who still feel that the Dark Doctor was a later invention should look no further than the fact that he was all set to expel Barbara and Ian from the TARDIS without even checking the quality of the air, radiation levels, etc. Burned to death in a house fire? Bring on the Second Doctor! Also, I swear D'Argenson is the second coming of Antodus from 'The Daleks,' though he mercifully didn't last as long. I absolutely love what Hartnell is doing in this story - that outfit is everything. There's some good tension building in the prison, with a decent level of intrigue. While I love that Carole Ann Ford narrates the audio for the missing episodes four and five, the episodes themselves aren't quite as good as the first three. I appreciate that they examined some moral and ethical issues, as they have in other stories. When done properly, it's one of the hallmarks of the best science fiction. Overall, this is a strong end to a brilliant first season - I'll give this story a 9/10 and place it fifth, just behind 'The Edge of Destruction' (also 9/10) and ahead of 'Marco Polo' (again, 9/10). Onward into Season Two we journey!
