This is part of a series of reviews of Doctor Who in chronological timeline order.

Previous Story: The Outlaws

A definite improvement over The Outlaws. It still has a fair few issues but most of the story is really really good stuff. The first half in particular is phenomenal. Incredibly atmospheric and it works brilliantly at building a sense of dread. I like the Miniaturist as a villain. In some ways reminiscent of the Toymaker but even more eldritch and bizarre.

I'm actually pretty impressed at how they're handling Dodo so far. I suppose it helps that she's such a blank slate of a companion that it's very easy to build off of. She gets some great moments here with an older version of herself although I do think it could've been utilised a tiny bit better.

The story gets a bit muddled as it progresses. It's all very surreal and a bit to it's detriment. The absolute highlight was the Doctor's conversation with the Miniaturist. It was a really well done moment and for some reason it just really fits 1 for me. Speaking of the Doctor, Noonan's impression is once again pretty solid here. I think he had better writing and direction here and it cut down on all the shouting which I don't think suits him. All in all, quite good, much better than the last one and it's given me a bit of hope for the future of this run.
