However, while they may be siblings in a technical sense, Rose and Danni struggle to find common ground, and their growing tension underscores much of the episode.

A FAMILIAR TALE OF SACRIFICE AND SURVIVAL

At first, the colony appears to be a safe haven. Its people are welcoming, treating Rose and Danni with kindness and tending to their injuries. This initial sense of security lulls both them and the audience into a false sense of comfort—before the story slowly peels back the layers to reveal the grim truth. The community’s leader, Lara, ensures their continued survival through a ritualistic form of sacrifice, sending one of their own to the anti-life at regular intervals to maintain peace. Her own daughter is next in line, making for a tragic parallel to the legend of Saint George and the Dragon. Lara isn’t a villain in the traditional sense—she genuinely believes her actions are necessary—but her pragmatism puts her at odds with Rose’s moral compass.

A CHARACTER-DRIVEN STORY THAT FEELS STRETCHED THIN

Much of The Lower Road is centred on quiet conversations, whether it’s Rose attempting to bond with Danni, or the slow revelation of the colony’s dark secret. While the performances are solid and the themes are thought-provoking, the story lacks urgency. The conflict between Rose and Danni is compelling in theory, with Danni’s struggles with their psychic abilities and their reluctance to acknowledge their connection to Rose adding emotional weight. However, the narrative unfolds at a sluggish pace, stretching these interactions across an entire episode without much variation in tension or stakes.

While The Lower Road has a strong thematic core and a well-executed atmosphere, its execution leaves something to be desired. The moral dilemma of the colony is interesting, and the strained dynamic between Rose and Danni offers potential, but the story ultimately feels drawn out. The slow pacing and focus on low-key conversations make it less engaging than it could have been. Nonetheless, it remains a solid character piece that deepens the relationship between its leads and adds another unsettling dimension to the anti-life threat.
