The Tenth Doctor travels back to the Dark Times. On a planet he visits the people are offered the chance to buy life shrouds to protect them from death since the Kottururh are coming…
Once again having listened to the TLV audios, and not feeling that I touched on the story, I’ve decided to go further. In the Enemy of My Enemy audio, the Eighth Doctor mentioned going back to the Dark Times and I was a little disappointed that the following audio didn’t take him there. So here its the Tenth that gets there.
Its been a long time since I last read a Doctor who novel. Growing up I had copies of The Mind Robber, the Ambassadors of Death, Fury From the Deep etc. So mentions of QR codes and such came a little unexpectedly.
I can't remember when I heard the Kotturuh mentioned first. As they seem to be the key component of the TLV series, I think I was hoping to find out more about them. However they seem to be more secondary characters. So whether we actually know how they got their powers or if its in another story I can’t say.
We meet Brian the Ood in this, or rather the Doctor does. As he featured in the audio He Kills Me, He Kills Me Not, its nice to have a bit more context as to who he is. I suppose this is a feature of the Timelord Victorious theme, the fact that there are ‘paths’ you can follow, by Doctor, story or other characters. As well as Brian the Ood, there’s Estinee - a girl seemingly impervious the the Kotturuh.
On the whole I found it enjoyable, perhaps not quite what I had thought. The Kotturuh are wiping out the life on worlds and The Doctor has to find a way to stop them. With this being set in the Dark Times, I thought maybe it would be more mysterious, but its not that different than any other time.
There are some nice interludes featuring other Doctors, only brief, but they were most welcome. Also mentions of the Waters of Mars and the choice the Doctor made.
A good ending, capped it off. I'd reccomend it.
