“HYPERION EMPIRE: A FIERY, ACTION-PACKED EARTH INVASION”
Hyperion Empire carries the weight and spectacle of a season finale—Earth under siege, a deserted and ash-covered London, and UNIT stepping up to face the threat. The bleak, apocalyptic imagery of the abandoned city is striking, with eerie depictions of ash zombies roaming the ruins. The action is relentless, featuring intense battles and gruesome deaths that push the limits of what could be done on TV.
STRONG WORLD-BUILDING AND A CLEVER RESOLUTION
The story moves at a brisk pace but still manages to flesh out the Hyperions and their plan to burn Earth to the ground. They aren’t the most original alien race, but their fiery nature and destructive ambitions make them an effective threat. The Doctor and Clara cleverly turn the Hyperions’ own abilities against them, using time travel to undo their invasion—a satisfying resolution that fits well within the Doctor Who playbook.
SAM THE FIREMAN: A FUN ADDITION
Sam the Fireman is a great supporting character—his skills naturally suit the story, and his easygoing charm makes him instantly likeable. His chemistry with Clara is enjoyable, particularly in the way he asks her out at the end, only to be turned down due to Clara still grieving Danny. It’s a small but meaningful moment that adds emotional depth.
TWELVE IN COMMAND, CLARA FEELS OFF
The Twelfth Doctor is once again on top form, taking charge as the President of Earth and navigating the chaos with his usual mix of authority and dry humour. Kate Stewart and UNIT’s involvement is always a welcome addition. However, Clara feels oddly disconnected throughout the story—her dynamic with Twelve seems strained, and she comes across as more annoying than usual.
UNEVEN ART QUALITY
While the action sequences are visually engaging, the character designs—especially for Twelve and Kate—feel off, with some rough, unpolished artwork that lacks the sharpness of previous issues. This slightly detracts from the overall experience.
VERDICT: A STRONG FINALE WITH SOME VISUAL MISSTEPS
Hyperion Empire delivers high-stakes action, clever twists, and a solid supporting cast, making for a satisfying comic book finale. While the Hyperions are not the most memorable villains, the bleak atmosphere, strong world-building, and fiery set pieces more than make up for it. The rough artwork and Clara’s somewhat detached presence hold it back slightly, but overall, it’s an enjoyable ride.
