Whenever I see the Name Rob Shearman on a Who Story, I take forever before I read/listen to it. Why? Because he is one of the greatest Writer that Who has ever had: Funny, thought-provoking, emotional & charming are Things that describe plenty of his stellar Works.
And well this one is no Exception, I am actually speechless once again. Shearman you did it again, you delivered a compelling Story with engaging Side Characters and a Story that is just bonkers. Frobisher, the Penguin Shape-Shifter, becomes God here and tries to introduce Free-Will. A Child with God-like Powers searching for his Father. And the sixth Doctor trying to figure out what in the Name of Rassilon is going on here, may sound messy at first, but they all click so well! The Dialogue is top-notch, funny, charming, biting and at times emotional.
The pacing of this one is excellent, no Bit, be it funny, intriguing or emotional feels drawn out, and they all come together to build a Story like no other. The Payoff to this Story had my Jaw drop, and it doesn't come out of nowhere, a bad Payoff often comes from poor Set-up or no Set-up, this one took its Time and gave you some Hints that some Things are just wrong with this World. I love how Six calls some People out for being bland Stereotype without much depth to them, I adore Stories about Stories and while this isn't the Focus, it gives the Story a lovely Touch to it.
Frobisher is amazing, I already loved him in the Comics, so that's not different here and while I get why some People would find his Voice annoying, I think it fits him oddly enough and works really well. The whole bit where he tries to help the People to become their own People is great and hilarious at times, I rarely say that because most Who Stories rarely hit the Chuckle-Note for me, but this one? Oh, it did that, alright.
Six is also just a Blast, Colin is usually that, so no Surprise here. I in particular adore the ending with him or when that 'Child-God' tries to look into his Mind, when he constantly refuses to tell him who his Father is. Just great Stuff!
It tackles various Topics and I think it goes about it in a pretty great Way, in particular how it explores Fatherhood/Parenthood was an interesting Touch.
The only Thing that I have issues here is maybe the Voice from the already mentioned 'Child-God', it gets after a while a bit annoying. But besides that? No, this is just superb.
ALL HAIL FROBISHER, ALL HAIL THE BIG TALKING BIRD!
