Review of The Crystal Throne by 15thDoctor

The Paternoster Gang were the unexpected breakout stars of the 2012 series of Doctor Who and were a brilliantly inventive and satisfying addition to the show. They are also perfectly suited to comic book adaptations, and their appearance in this story highlights just how well they fit this medium. It makes me wish they had more comic book adventures, as this format feels ideal for them.

The depiction of Crystal Palace in the pages of Doctor Who Magazine is stunning, and it’s delightful to see the gang embark on a Victorian-era adventure, complete with posh frocks, as they save Queen Victoria from an alien menace. Doctor Who and the Victorian era pair so naturally, and this story capitalises on that synergy beautifully. It’s a wonderful opportunity to dive into that setting, and I only wish there were more of it.

If there were to be more, however, one tweak I’d suggest is reducing the use of cursive writing on the pages—it made the text difficult to read at times, and I found myself straining to follow the dialogue. That’s a minor quibble, though, in what is otherwise a delightful story.
