The conclusion to the show's first story arc! How did it end up? Very aggressively average.
This is unfortunately Mary Tamm's final televised appearance as the wonderful Romana (Still a season of Fourth Doctor Adventures to go) but her arc finally comes to a close, as she's a fully fledged time traveller now, showing compassion to the people she meets and having the knowledge to help out. Both Tamm and Baker are having a ball together, which can be seen in their chemistry, and the Doctor has clearly softened too, but hasn't completely changed as to no longer need Romana to challenge him. Despite this, the times he is challenged by Romana is used to his advantage, with him disregarding Astra's death, and then later using that disregard against the Black Guardian. The time and care taken in these two character arcs has been well structured and is worth watching this entire season for. Oh and we found out the Doctor's name - Theta Sigma. There's no mystery anymore, the show is ruined, #RIP Doctor Who 1963-1979... Sound familiar?
This is what people expect of Old Doctor Who. The Shadow is an odd creation indeed. He's a very generic pantomimey villain, which was great in concept, but failed ultimately in execution. And of course he was a servant to the Black Guardian. Something I was slightly disappointed with was the lack of the Black Guardian in this season - I expected him to show up at least once before the final few minutes.
The nuclear war was an interesting idea, and there was some great camera direction which felt very modern for this period of the show during these few episodes, but I found the third planet far more interesting. The concept of two planets with a third in the middle was unique and inspired, and this kind of worldbuilding as this society was explored is something that definitely made this season a special one.
I found it very odd seeing Romana I and Romana II standing side-by-side. My favourite character was definitely Drax, another Time Lord who's more of a del-boy, but him showing up midway through Episode 5 was very peculiar indeed - Just happening to be there at the same time as the Doctor and Romana! How strange.
A solid conclusion to this arc, but I don't think it's on par with the rest of the season, which is a real shame.
