Really great. Really really great. But I still prefer Kinda.
Snakedance doesn't really feel like a sequel to Kinda, but that's probably a good thing. I appreciate Christopher Bailey not wanting to retread old ground, even if that means there are very few thematic or characteristic ties between the two stories.
Unfortunately, Tegan (or rather Janet Fielding, as the Mara in Tegan's body) doesn't get much to do in this story. She has her moments, but it's Martin Clunes who does most of the dirty work. Martin Clunes is great and all, but it feels a bit weird to have Tegan be set aside in a story about her very literal inner demon.
This story feels very long. That's not to say it has bad pacing, just that there's a lot more content than in most four-parters. Not a bad thing by any means, but it does dissuade me from rewatching this anytime soon.
Lastly, can anyone really call this better than Kinda when the climax revolves around a magic rock? The Mara literally screams, "NO! THE CRYSTAL!" Come on. This is Doctor Who, not a middle schooler's D&D campaign.
With all that said, yes, Snakedance is positively excellent.
