A story with phenomenal character work - every character is developed and rounded so well, that there are so many layers added which enhance a, possibly quite simple, story into something special. The turmoil and complexities of Steven, Dodo feeling out of place and alone - these are dimensions, Dodo especially, needed to develop. Further, the conflict between Steven and the Doctor throughout this story, and in response to the events prior in The Massacre, add great and interesting dynamics throughout.
The villains are such a wonderful concept too - throughout I was left engaging and struggling with concepts of God's and religion, and what they truly mean and represent, using New York in the 1960s as a brilliant backdrop to consider issues of racism and the ongoing Vietnam War, and how God's are meant to intervene within this. Such brilliantly fascinating, and wonderful ideas which could only really be delved into as complexly as this story does, within this novel medium. And it is just done so well.
It must be said, that moments of the story made me very uncomfortable - and I do have to acknowledge this, while I massively enjoyed the majority of the story. Dodo's treatment and events which happen to her at the start, feel very out of place within any Doctor Who medium - however, it is clear that this book is for a more mature medium. There is very little narrative reason for these events to occur, and throughout continue to seem unnecessary. It is a shame that this leaves a black spot against another wise perfect story.
