Review of Planet of Elves by deltaandthebannermen

This review contains spoilers!

The first short story in the Big Finish collection, Christmas Around the World, is, apparently, set at the North Pole. The 4th Doctor and Adric arrive and discover aliens (who look a bit like elves) subjugated and enslaved in Santa's workshop. Adric goes undercover as an elf and helps the Doctor uncover the truth. The aliens are still on their home planet but have been drugged to the point where they don't realise that the North Pole outside their workshop is a fake.

I've always found the pairing of the 4th Doctor and Adric hard to get a handle on. On TV they only have the briefest of times together before Nyssa, then Tegan and finally the 5th Doctor add to the mix. It makes identifying what makes their relationship unique a bit tricky and I'm never quite sure there's much point (let alone gaps between TV stories) of having them as your choice of TARDIS crew.

The idea of Christmas being turned into a business has been done in many Christmas books and films and is diverting enough here. The idea of a subjugated alien race that look like elves is also fun and Adric disguising himself as one makes for a fun sequence. The final twist is quite neat.

Overall, this is entertaining but nothing particularly noteworthy.
