“MY MATE, ERIMEM: A COFFEE SHOP CONFESSION WITH LITTLE FLAVOUR”

My Mate, Erimem is a five-minute audio adventure released by BBV Productions, focusing on Andy Hansen—a friend of the Fifth Doctor’s companion Erimem—recounting her experiences working in a coffee shop and time-travelling to ancient Egypt. On paper, this could have been a fun little character piece, but in practice, it barely does anything to make Andy or Erimem particularly interesting.

If Andy appears in the Erimem books, then perhaps this is meant to be an extra insight into her character. But if she doesn’t, then this story does little to establish her as someone worth caring about.

A STATIC VISUAL PRESENTATION

The video version of the story features a single drawing of Andy in Egypt. It’s fine but unremarkable, offering nothing dynamic or engaging to enhance the experience.

A STORY THAT GOES NOWHERE

Andy’s monologue is a meandering ramble about her job, the people she meets, and her encounters with historical figures like Cleopatra—who, as she points out, is nothing like the Elizabeth Taylor version. The problem is that none of this is particularly interesting or relevant. There’s no real tension, no engaging hook, just a casual retelling of events with no weight or impact.

The story concludes with Andy praising Erimem for taking her on adventures and keeping her safe. And… that’s it. There’s no twist, no revelation, just a lukewarm closing sentiment that doesn’t feel earned.

A PERFORMANCE THAT LACKS ENERGY

Sarah-Jane Wareham voices Andy, but her delivery is so flat and uninspired that it sounds like she’s just reading lines off a page—which, to be fair, she is. There’s no real effort to bring Andy to life, making the character feel even more bland than the script already does.

📝VERDICT: 2/10

A dull and lifeless audio piece that fails to engage on any level. My Mate, Erimem is neither an interesting character study nor a compelling adventure, and the uninspired performance only makes matters worse. If you’re an Erimem completist, you might get some mild enjoyment from it, but for everyone else, this is entirely skippable.
