Review of More than a Messiah by DanTheMan2150AD

4 July 2025

My dear young lady, in order to be blinded, you must first have been given the gift of sight.

With the short but sweet Summoned by Shadows ending up a surprising runaway success on its initial home video release, a sequel was quickly fast-tracked and released the following year. More Than a Messiah is a lot more interesting and daring than the rather safe first outing in the Stranger series, tackling themes of environmentalism and playing much more like one of Colins better adventures.

MAJUS XVII - a paradise world of plenty where interplanetary tourists can relax and enjoy life. But not for the retired Bernard Denton and his wife Charlotte, pleasure comes at too high a price. The Stranger and Miss Brown soon find themselves embroiled in a battle against nature itself as a mysterious girl displays an infatuated obsession with The Stranger.

Although this one begins a long and baffling trend of poorly justified nakedness in BBV films with Colin and Sophie Aldred appearing together in one very infamous scene, it's a very engaging and yet highly interesting little 43-minute adventure a mix of NuWho pacing and Classic Who storytelling. The direction is pretty standard at this point and the visual effects of the multicoloured sky blend together quite nicely with the choice of angles but the ending is a bit all over the place due to the skirting of copyright meaning the characters do just sort of escape with no explanation.

Colin Baker is much more Doctor-like in this one and still allows for some great melancholy moments thanks to Nigel Fairs' writing, Nicola Bryant is again great as Miss Brown, but it's Peter Miles' Bernard and Sophie Aldred's performances that really stand out in this adventure. Alistair Lock's soundtrack is really great and thankfully is included on the DVD isolated for those who enjoy a varied and lovely synth soundscape.

Overall, More Than a Messiah is a much more interesting story that really starts to show the strengths of what this series could be in terms of Unofficial Doctor Who.

Takes more than a few party tricks to be a god. I should know.
