Imaginary Friends marks the beginning of a special series of books celebrating 60 years of Doctor Who with each book focusing on a respective decade. The first takes us to the very beginning with the 60s and follows the ordinary life of the Billing family over a period of a few years as the nine year old Gerry is convinced of the existence of a man he visits in his dreams. Whenever Gerry sleeps he finds himself on strange worlds seeing fantastic creatures and following the adventures of his wonderful friends the Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Susan.

Imaginary Friends is an excellent tale on the joy and heartbreak of how times change and people you've grown fond of come and go as Gerry follows the First Doctor for the entirety of his era and then suffers more heartbreak when he sees this kind old grandfather figure "go away forever" with a new man taking his place. It's very reflective of how a lot of fans follow the show (especially the younger fans) and have to come to terms with characters, including the Doctor, that they love leave. But it does go into why that's not entirely a bad thing as it allows us to meet and make new friends. This is a beautiful book that I wholeheartedly recommend
