Have I Told You Lately kicks off the Lost in Translation box set with one of Tim Foley's all time best works, and considering the ground that covers and will cover (still need to listen to Hooklight) that's saying a lot! The setup has the Doctor and Benny separated from one another on a seemingly dead ship but they both encounter a garbled voice coming from the intercom. What starts off as static-like noise soon mophs into a voice that can speak simple words. We soon discover that the ship itself is learning words from the Doctor and Benny and is gradually coming back to life. The Doctor and Benny cut off from each other must learn how to make the ship guide them to one another while also learning the true nature of this vessel.
This is one of the more thematic Tim Foley scripts he's ever written, with some excellent takes on the themes of miscommunication and learning how to understand each other and he uses the Unbound Doctor and Benny's strained relationship to fashion an environment that explores their frustrations with one another. It builds to an astonishing climax and a beautiful ending with David Warner giving one of his best performances as the Doctor, Lost in Translation is one of the strongest box sets Big Finish has ever put out and a large part of that comes from just how powerful this opener is
