In this story there are no stakes so great that they cannot be in a moment completely undone by The Doctor, or the superhero and his family. We barely have a chance to breathe as we are flung from one poorly defined destination to another. The same is true of the various enemies they face. The Sycorax barely register in the final part - introduced and immediately dispensed with in such a way that makes you wonder why they even bothered including them. Every question has an immediately apparent and easy answer.
My immediate thought after finishing the story was that George Mann simply gave himself too much to do. Having to use the framework of hunting four crystals spread across the universe (for reasons undefined) hampered the plot. I would have rather seen any one of these stories fleshed out.
Given that we’d only ever met these guest characters as a one of in The Return of Doctor Mysterio, they could have even afforded to set the whole thing in New York and tell us something new about these character’s lives.
Potentially the most damning thing you can say about Ghost Stories is that once you get past the first issue it ceases to function like a comic book superhero story - which is surely the USP of these characters in the Doctor Who Universe?
