Gangland is an awful lot of fun. The Rat Pack; Frank Sinatra; gambling; Las Vegas in the 60s; the Godfather references; the gangsters – and then an alien that sits really nicely with all that. The ultimate mobster, but this mobster is a tentacled octopus. I think it all comes together really beautifully and it’s an awful lot of fun. I really like the idea of Rassalon’s roulette, though did think it was probably a bit obvious that the game would be fixed. I don’t think Rassalon or The Doctor really would put a time gun to their head. The only other criticism I have is that it’s quite violent and The Doctor is not admonishing the violence around him. Having said that, the sheer amount of joy and fun throughout the whole story overrides all of that. It has a really nice pace and energy to it. It uses the best aspects of Peter Capaldi’s Doctor. He’s not needlessly mean in this but has a good level of grumpiness!
