This final chapter in Emily Winter and Matthew Finnegan’s travels with the Doctor is staggeringly ambitious and detail-oriented. Though this IDW run has been relatively brief, these characters have earned my genuine emotional investment. The story isn’t flawless - it concludes with considerable narrative hand-waving, particularly Matthew’s transformation into a mythical catalyst, laden with callbacks to earlier events which don’t feel naturally seeded.
Yet the drama remains compelling, delivering a thrilling, fun journey. The Terror Firma / Sol 3 revelation - where communities have evolved into the “terror farmers” and “soul-free” groups - feels overly familiar. The concept of a society regressing from scientific sophistication to primitive detachment, with terms changing over time echoes themes in The Doctor’s Daughter and The Face of Evil.
Despite these critiques, the comic is a monumental achievement. The creative team’s ambition shines, particularly in weaving Winter and Finnegan’s arc into the Doctor Who universe. This run of comics - imperfect but bold - leaves me deeply grateful to have experienced it.
