Review of Echoes of Grey by No311

2 May 2025

This is the first story of Zoe Heriot's company arc, which I have heard many good things about and decided to check out with the recent Companion Chronicles sale. As a first story, it is quite dull. The ploy that Ali tries to pull is laughably obvious, though the mention of the company is interesting enough. The rest of the story does the title justice: Zoe is experiencing recovered memories, Echoes of a Grey base with uninteresting people and a basic dilemma. The only interesting things are the achromatics, though I found the reason for their name unnecessarily convoluted. The beginning and ending try to invoke pathos in how Zoe's missing memories affect her and then her bravery of saying no, but this is shot in the foot by the fact that very little of the rest of the play gives this angle any attention.

In the end, I wouldn't say this one worked very well. I hope the rest of the arc is better.
