Hour One is the introduction to the Doom's Day event, and I guess it sets things up pretty well, there's not really much of a story mind, and I hate to be that girl, but it only really covers 20 minutes at most, boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder.
Jokes aside it is decently well-written with a comedic tone and an Adamsian secretary who hates her job and everyone else, but that's really it. It isn't bad, but then it isn't really much of anything, and quite frankly the most fun I had with it was speculating about which incantation of The Doctor appears in it as it's never stated besides them being referred to as 'him' and old, but then I am a babbling Whovian mega-nerd so that's really to be expected (my money's on 12 btw, I can just hear Peter Capaldi saying, "I wouldn't…" with no further context. Also, the setting is very, mid-to-late-Moffat-era in vibe).
The set-up, as us die-hards have known for months, is that Death is coming for Doom and she needs to find The Doctor to help her defeat it, which is set up pretty well in this, though I will say I legit thought it was the Decayed Master that appeared from the shadows until Doom calls it Death. Now, is this the most interesting concept? no, but as is often the case with Doctor Who, it doesn't need to be to tell incredible stories, it certainly helps, but it doesn't need to be, so I remain somewhat hopeful.
Doom herself, so far, seems quite lightly characterized as a bit of a snarky, quippy, know-it-all, which is fine, but as with all of this, not exactly new, exiting or really all that interesting. Does it make me clamour for more Doom? No. Does it make me excited to shell out all the money the series is going to cost? No. Does it lay the groundwork for the most exciting cross-platform event ever? Maybe, I don't know. But does it pass the time decently well? Yeah. So all-together, in Doom's words, "Meh." 6/10
