Review of Destroy the Infinite by Ryebean

The Doctor encounters the Eminence for the first time, and his life will never be the same again... shame that this doesn't feel like a life-changing experience.

Poor Doctor. For an important moment in his life, he gets "taken over" and then doesn't do anything. He just rants for a bit then comes the twist that we all knew from the beginning. Leela gets a bit more focus in this story, and there's a discerning moment right at the end which shows the difference between the two - Leela wants to celebrate their victory, and the Doctor wants to remember what they lost.

The Eminence aren't very good. They just yell a lot, and there's nothing that makes them stand out from a standard Who monster. I do think their greatest scene was the opening one where it suggests even their devoted employees are terrified of their power. I just hope that they have some more thrilling encounters in the future.

Something that works really well are characters that are built up across the series, but then suddenly killed without another second by the Eminence. I think this is a unique way of building up the threat, as it creates a sense of unfinishedness with the side characters and we feel like there's more to learn from them.

To conclude, this story has some interesting ideas, but ultimately flops on the execution. However, it does improve due to the fact that the story helped me with my Science exam.
