Review of Destiny of the Daleks by Ryebean

Romana II, Movellans, Davros, and rock paper scissors in Terry Nation's final script for the TV Series - What could go wrong?!

It's hard to think that this is the same Doctor that was terrified of the Daleks and Davros upon their previous encounter - He's full of slapstick comedy and odd jokes, covering Daleks' eyesights with hats, pushing them around and saving the day with two games - arm wrestling and rock paper scissors. However, he makes some very questionable choices, such as randomly murdering a Kaled mutant he finds in the wilds. For Romana II's first outing, I was very disappointed with the material she got for this story - she ends up being just another screaming Dr Who girl, not the Romana we got used to in Season 16. Whilst K-9 isn't in the majority of the story, I love the line "How can a robot catch laryngitis? I mean, what do you need it for?"

It's a scandal that the Daleks were treated marvellously in Genesis, and terribly in Destiny. They had one good scene, where they exterminated many prisoners just to save Davros, but then that didn't work and they just let him escape when they could've killed him easily - he was nowhere near Davros and he put the sonic screwdriver back in his pocket. Also, they're not robots - they're mutants in a tank. Terry Nation came up with that concept, so why is he ignoring it now? Davros's mask clearly doesn't fit on Gooderson, and apart from that one scene where he wakes up, there's no fear or threat from him - That threat is taken away immediately when the Doctor and Romana are just wheeling Davros through the corridors and the music's fun and jaunty - Davros doesn't even call for help!

Back on Skaro again - Does Terry Nation not like exploring other worlds at all? How disappointing. Basic Skaro quarry, but the Dalek control room looks great, as does the Movellan ship. The problem with Skaro being just another quarry now is that there's no petrified forest, no strange, terrifying creatures to add to the atmosphere from their very first outing.

The Movellans look fantastic, it's so wonderfully 80s - and it's 1979! They disappointed me though - I was extremely excited and hyped for them, knowing that they warranted a cameo in the Pilot, but then again... boring robots fighting a war of logic is clever, but that's not a Dalek story. Some interesting Dalek slaves and there could've been more focus on them.

I wasn't overly hyped about this - there were some things that created interest, but I had heard that this wasn't very good, and it's not.
