Review of Creatures of Beauty by Ryebean

A few minutes before listening to this story, I found out that it wasn't in a linear order, so I wonder whether, if I had gone into this story without forewarning, I would've enjoyed it as much because I would've been confused as to why it kept jumping about.

Something I really enjoy about this story is the way it builds suspense by referring to the aftermath, and from a linear aspect, it's great to see how the Doctor's mood grows more forlorn as the story wears on. Davison's performance is brilliant, and I think it was a stroke of genius on the director's part to record it in linear order so it's easier for the actors to understand the way their parts progress. After witnessing a murder, Nyssa is subject to an interrogation, sexual harassment as the men all catcall her and objectify her, and a lot more. It's a very traumatic ordeal for her and it's dealt in a very interesting way. Again, the plot is built up slowly with the different narrative, but it meant that the impact was a bit lessened as this isn't mentioned too much.

I struggled a bit to follow the story - it's a nice narrative tool, but it can cause a lot of problems - if it's a complicated storyline, it makes it difficult to process, but if it's too simple, then it can be a bit bland. I think there's a pretty good balance between the two but I definitely wouldn't be able to describe the plot to you. The Koteem are the main villains, I guess, and they're average, if forgettable, monsters. There's a great conspiracy subplot going on with Lady Forlean and it has some great messages of how looks and beauty aren't everything. There's a similar message with Galaxy 4, but it's a bit muddled under all the "feminism is bad" themes - here, it gets time to breathe. I think if it had less of the jumping about, again, it could've had more effect.

I like the way that the story weaves the setting into the plot itself, it creates an atmospheric and rather dangerous tone towards it - they're being poisoned and the Doctor can't help but interfere. I would've loved to have seen this have an effect on the Doctor and Nyssa, though.

The side characters don't really leave anything to be desired. There's a lot going on, but I feel like that the mish-mash of the timeline makes it hard for me to understand what's going on and why I should care about them.

The music's alright, nothing too special - but I'm glad we've got the actual theme tune back!

Favourite Line: Our civilisation isn’t dying, its already dead. All that’s left is a rotting corpse.

Yeah, this seems a bit overrated. I like where they were going, and for the most part, the confusing mishaps works, but I feel like that's done just to make that story more special and doesn't really have anything to do with the story itself, and it can make things very confusing at times. By the end, I was just thinking "okay, that's done." It's good, but not as memorable and experimental as it's claimed to be.
