From the first episode, I thought this was going to be a fun romp about an evil gamesmaster who was kidnapping people throughout time to create her popular immersive gaming empire. So I was kind of shocked to discover that this episode is actually about the race called the Ravagers who manage to use time energy to fill the Time Vortex which starts to unravel all of time, thereby potentially destroying the universe and the Doctor is crossing his own timeline as well.
In theory this may sound like a step up, it's certainly a dramatic increase in the stakes of the story. However I found this to be a step down from the already disappointing 'Spheres of Freedom'.
Firstly most of the plot threads from the first episode are touched upon, but largely ignored here. Instead we focus on a bunch of new plot threads. It feels like there's too many plates spinning here. Also there's a lot of different settings for the Doctor to jet off to, as well as multiple different points in the Doctor's own timeline to keep track off. This being an audio story, there aren't any visual cues to let me know where we are in any given scene. So with all the plot threads and all the timeline crossing settings, there's too much to keep track off here, and I found this episode to be too much of a headache to try and keep everything straight.
There are some fun moments in here, Eccleston is a joy to listen to and Audrey is revealing herself to be a far more interesting character than I'd initially thought. But ultimately this episode is even more of a let down than the first.
