Starting this off by referencing other abnormally large insects in Doctor Who, both Classic and Revival, is a really nice touch, especially with the use of both footage from those episodes, newly recorded footage, and art of some of those species. It helps build intrigue and so when Jack says we know less about the Vespiform than those, we don't question it for a second, already being hooked.
The use of art from a classic TV comic as well, implying that the giant titular Killer Wasps from that story may have been vespiform is a really really fun use of Doctor Who continuity.
Also the idea that Jack bought the firestone after it was found just really does work, and adds a nice bookend to the TV story.
