In fact, the main plot twist in this story stems from the paradox caused by the interaction of the Thirteenth and Tenth in A Little Help.... From the first pages, we are shown the year 2020, in which London has long been destroyed, humanity is under the rule of sea devils, and Rose Tyler is alive and part of the human resistance. Later, it turns out that she also has no idea who the Doctor is.
I have to admit that this is a very interesting plot twist. The sea devils are just an iconic character; the new version of Rose, who grew up in a completely different cruel world, is interesting. And the plot development is very good.
As in A Little Help..., in Alternating Current we have two subplots that will later converge into one: the plot of the Thirteenth and the plot of the Tenth (most likely, it's the Tenth, which is about to come to the events of the episode Water of Mars. I will explain why later). The plot of the Thirteenth includes more important events and is the leading basis of the overall story, where all the main interactions with the sea devils, rebels and, unexpectedly, the new Queen of Scythe, who helps humanity in the liberation struggle (this is important!) take place. Instead, the subplot of the Tenth shows the Doctor interacting with the new version of Rose from the time before the paradox, but the two quickly join the Thirteenth team.
Why did I mention the importance of the new Queen of Scythe? Because we've only seen her in one episode before - Nikola Tesla's Night of Horrors. No big deal. That's actually why I'm mentioning it, because the whole invasion of the Earth by sea devils happens precisely because the paradox in the comic book changes the events of this episode, and therefore Scytra kidnaps not only Tesla, but also Edison, which changes the timeline.
In the new timeline, the new queen, who was elected after the devils and everything else had been awakened, realises that she made a mistake and begins to atone for it, not only by helping people in the 2020s, but also by playing a major role in fixing the past, back when Tesla and his sidekick were kidnapped.
This actually gives us two interesting things: first, a new perspective on the alien race, which in the series itself was presented in a black-and-white prism. This presentation was quite reasonable, given their way of life, and the comic does not justify their actions. The plot shows how the younger generation rethinks and corrects the sins and mistakes of their predecessors. And secondly, the actual move with the return to Tesla and the change in these events is quite interesting, as it presents us with a familiar episode from a new perspective, where both we and the Doctor already know how it all went down, but this time everything is a little different....The ending, in addition to resolving the paradox, is interesting to us for three reasons:
And while we'll talk more about points 1 and 2 in this article, point three is shrouded in mystery. Because the announcement of the imminent return was made in 2022, and it's already 2024, and there is no new volume about the Doctor and Corsair on the horizon. From the information we have about the cancelled Year Two, we can assume that this appearance of the Corsair was supposed to lead us into the next arc in Year Two. But then again, why add a message about an imminent return to an issue after it's been cancelled? We don't know. And who knows if we'll ever find out. Maybe we'll get an arc of new adventures of the Doctor and the Corsair in the future.
In general, the mini-series is good, I really liked it, I would also recommend reading it.
