Audio Club

Join us as we listen to Doctor Who audio dramas together!

Each week we pick an audio drama to listen to, then we discuss it in the forums and rate it on the site. All participants earn an "Audio Club" badge for each one they complete!

Every Friday we listen to a new episode from the Main Range. We also have several "Audio Club Extras" where we delve into other sets, including Gallifrey!

The Audio Club is open to all! Pick an audio from any we have featured so far and write your thoughts!

This page is a work in progress!

“Jonathan Blum just really understands the way politically motivated public speaking can rouse emotional responses in groups, particularly negative emotions such as hate and fear. The power of rhetorics can be immense and the way Jacqueline Pierce acts is just spot on in portraying this.

The whole “they are just saying what everyone thinks” excuse is still as relevant today as it was a hundred years ago.”

Comment on: The Fearmonger

“Happy to admit that I'll always have a fondness for this story as it was the first full story for a single Doctor that Big Finish released and, thus, really felt like Doctor Who in a meaningful sense was back. It's possibly one of the most “Gatissy” of Mark Gatiss's stories, and I find it a real comfort listen. I haven't listened to it for many a year so wasn't sure how I'd find it this time around. For me, at least, it still hasn't lost its charm.”

“A real favourite of mine. If Sirens was fan-service to get the ball rolling and Phantasmagoria was BF showing that they could do a TV serial on audio, then Whispers was their first truly ground-breaking story.

Not only is it a tale which only works on audio, as others have mentioned, but it manages to avoid the kind of in-jokes and references which plague a lot of fan fiction. No historical side-gags or wandering classic monsters, just a clever, tight, story told in a new and exciting way.”

Comment on: Whispers of Terror

“…ish is one of those stories that, above all else, fascinates.

It's an absolutely brilliant series of ideas moulded into the shape of a story and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I think it runs out of steam by the end of Part 2, but it's still wildly creative and endlessly fun throughout.”

“I love this audio so much, Shearman is such a fantastic writer and this is one of the few early main range stories I own on CD i love it that much.

Equal parts wacky and terrifying, Shearman is a master of the balancing act

All hail the big talking bird.”

Comment on: The Holy Terror

“The two main reasons why this story works so well are the funny, clever, and surprising script (many LOL moments, a couple of good twists, great characterization, and AMAZING dialogue!). As well as Evelyn.

Big Finish has introduced several great companions over the years, but Evelyn is, to me, the very best. It's partly down to the lovely performance from Maggie Stables (bless her soul!) and the way she's written as a mature, well-educated, witty, and no-nonsense woman who refuses to be controlled or told what to do and not to do by the Doctor.”

“Jim Mortimore's music (available on his Bandcamp page) really does a good job of building the tension and carrying the atmosphere. The main players McGann, Fisher and Stephen Parring as Sebastian Grayle are all brilliant.

I think the sign of a good audio story is when talking/writing about it makes you want to listen to it again. It's on my to-do list for tomorrow!”

Comment on: Seasons of Fear

“Maybe I am a bit bias since I was already big on 8 anyways, but I must say I really enjoyed this one. Sure, in some ways it plays some things safe, but I think it delivers on what it wants to be perfectly!

I love the setting, I love the idea, and the instant report between 8 and Charley is lovely. I'd think at some point McGann still feels unsure how to adapt to this new medium and especially playing this part again, but from what he did, I think he did pretty good.

The Sound Design is also so much better and helps you to picture this whole situation! Overall this may not be the best audio we ever had but honestly for me, it's a favorite out of the first bunch. Really charming, filled with some superb ideas!”

“I've been really enjoy 6 and Evelyn's adventures together, and this one is no slouch either. It's so fun hearing Lalla Ward back as Romana along with having what almost feels like a prelude to Time War events (even though that wouldn't become apart of canon until 2005 but I digress). I love hearing Time Lord politics at play while dealing with the Daleks, and every one does a very good job acting wise, quite fun of a story.”

“Wow, that was so epic. The story is grand in its scope, the atmosphere is perfectly surreal and mind-bending, and the duet of 8th and Charley, as always, provides interesting dynamic.

Literally can't wait for the next entry in this ark, the cliffhanger is note-by-note perfect, it could be seriously considered for the best cliffhanger in all of 'Doctor Who' in any medium (and I'm also really grateful that I don't have to wait as long as people who were listening to Main Range at the time it was coming out).”

Comment on: Neverland

“Five is the watcher, the planner. He tends to sit back and examine things and then jump in and save the day once all the pieces are in play. Not necessarily a chessmaster that Seven is but there can often be shades of it. The fascinating thing is that this story plays that against him: by the time the Doctor sees all the pieces put into play, it's too late. Also put into play everything else everyone has said about this story. It's very much appreciably one of those GOAT Big Finish releases for a reason.”

“I am now listening to this again and god dammit Louise Jameson is good isn't she??!! She breaks my heart every single time 💔 I love that this episode just ends up as a sorry mess. I love that it's a tragedy. And I love that nobody wins. Maybe it's just me but I love when things end badly ☺️ and it's not without reason here, because the whole point is that the Time Lords meddling ends in misery for everyone. That they shouldn't, and yet still they do. That seeing people's lives as a game is an awful thing to do, and that humans aren't above doing that too.”
